lavender in bloom
So much has been happening in the garden this past month and I have regretfully been neglecting this space as our busy season is in full swing. These garden journal posts are nothing if not simply guides for next year’s garden adventure.
With July came the explosion of flowers. Flowering veggies and herbs, edible and medicinal flowers and those which we grew for their over the top beauty and aroma. The garden has been humming with activity this past month with our honey bee hive growing strong as well as other pollinating insects and least I forget the wonderful birdsong which greets us each morning with the sun.
We harvested the sweet pea crop and all of the garlic in early July. Carrots and beets have been selected daily from their beds for juicing and adding to meals. Our third sowing of radish has not fared well in this mid summer heat so we will wait until late August/early September to sow another round of seeds. A couple of days ago we harvested all of the potatoes and are readying the bed for carrots to be harvested in September. We have one artichoke fruit so far. The peach tree foliage has just bolted this year and our trees are well over 10 ft. tall. Some peaches have bugs and some look perfect. Our blueberry bushes have succumbed to the birds. Will return to netting them again next year. The raspberry bramble has out-performed itself this season with abundant luscious red fruit we enjoy every morning.
All of the perennial herbs have been moved to the front yard where a new garden is forming. A large patch of chamomile now blankets most of the front too. We are making use of every bit of earth we can. We will plant more perennial flowers in back where the herbs once resided. I think this will make the honey bees very happy too.
Our large patch of heirloom chili peppers are now bearing fruit and we watch in excitement as green and dark purple young peppers grow into fierce fiery things. What hopes to be a bumper crop of tomatoes are staring to turn shades of yellow, red and purple.
Our garden nourishes body and soul. Each passing moment spent in her realm reaffirms our connection to this earth; grateful for what can be accomplished with some seeds, dirt, water, sunshine and elbow grease. Here’s looking to the gifts she has yet to bear in the heat of August. Give Thanks!
