Maine holds a special place in my heart. Maybe it’s because I have visited Maine nearly every year since birth and have made treasured childhood memories there playing with my brother and sister amongst its rustic rocky shores. Or it could very well be its natural wild beauty.

Last year my parents and sister packed up everything in Connecticut and moved up to Maine. They purchased a beautiful south-facing slope of 10-acre pasture and have started cultivating crops and building a home. Since then we have made a yearly trip in late September to visit family, go to the Common Ground Fair in Unity and just enjoy life in Maine for a week. Iley had a blast and I loved seeing him make his own memories of Maine as I did at his age.

September may well be my favorite month on Nantucket but I couldn’t miss the fair and it is equally as beautiful in Maine that time of year.

If you have never been, I highly suggest heading up to the Common Ground Fair. It is everything a country fair should be on a grand scale. Run by MOGFA it centers around sustainable farming, homesteading, foods, and just plain living day to day in tune with the earth. There are workshops and demos, lots of animals, even more good food, 2 large farmers’ markets at each entrance, and the most amazing vendors of everything handmade you can think of. The wool and fiber selection was the best I’ve ever seen. I was so overwhelmed by the choices I didn’t even purchase any, which I am now regretting. I have been wanting to start needle felting for some time now and that would have been the perfect place to stock up on roving.

I didn’t take many photos with my DSLR but posted a lot (maybe too many?) from my phone on instagram, which you can link to on the sidebar. Shown here are some from Common Ground and Owl’s Head, my favorite little town in Maine.

Looking forward to next year’s trip already and will hopefully be bringing some friends with us to stay and camp at the farm.

In other news, Fare Isle received a nice nod from Emilie of The Clever Carrot in a feature in Food & Wine. Emilie is amazing as are her healthy seasonal recipes. Be sure to check out her blog if you don’t already!

Next up on the blog will be some more fall-inspired recipes. I’m working on writing down and measuring the recipe for the ravioli posted on Instagram earlier in the week. Since so many of you asked! They were reeeeal good.

Until then friends!
